Renting  Information

There's a lot of information out there on your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.

  • Tenancy Services is the government service responsible for administering the law around tenancies. Their website has a wealth of information, including typical rents and bonds in different neighbourhoods, forms for setting up a tenancy, and information about your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
  • The website of the Citizens' Advice Bureau also has useful information on tenancy rights, as well as on how to access emergency or social housing.
  • The Community Law Centre website is another important resource for renters. They have advice on finding a flat, finding a good deal on a power company, and organising your finances, as well as legal issues.
If you need extra support or advice:
  • Tenants in Palmerston North, please contact us.
  • Tenants in Auckland can contact the Auckland Tenants' Protection Association on 09 360 1473.
  • Tenants in Christchurch, get in touch with the Tenants Protection Association.
  • Tenants in Wellington should get in contact with Renters United (Wellington).
  • Elsewhere, people who need support and advice on tenancy matters can contact their local Citizens Advice Bureau or Community Law Centre.
